Herbert Grönemeyer - "Land unter" (MTV Unplugged 1995)

This week, I'm going to blog about German artists who have performed MTV Unplugged concerts. For anyone unfamiliar with the event, it is an honor bestowed upon the best popular artists around the world to perform a special acoustic concert for their fans. The concerts receive massive airplay on MTV and recordings of these albums are sold on video and CD's. These events have produced 6 Grammy Award nominations (4 wins) and 13 Latin Grammy Award nominations (9 wins). Some of the most memorable performances on MTV Unplugged include those by Nirvana and Alicia Keys.

Thus far, there have been 7 German artists so honored by MTV. It should come as no surprise that the first was Herbert Grönemeyer, who performed at Studio Babelsberg in Berlin on May 14, 1995. He is probably most well known to Americans as war correspondent Lieutenant Werner in the famous German film "Das Boot". However, Herbert Grönemeyer the singer went on to record 20 albums, two of which are the best selling German-language records of all-time.

Lyrics (for educational purposes only):
Der Wind steht schief
die Luft aus Eis
die Möven kreischen stur
Elemente duellieren sich
Du hältst mich auf Kurs
hab keine Angst vor'm Untergeh'n
Gischt schlägt ins Gesicht
kämpf mich durch zum Horizont
denn dort treff ich Dich
Geleite mich heim
rauhe Endlosigkeit
bist zu lange fort
mach die Feuer an
damit ich Dich finden kann
steig zu mir an Bord
übernimm die Wacht
bring mich durch die Nacht
rette mich durch den Sturm
faß mich ganz fest an
daß ich mich halten kann
bring mich zu Ende
laß mich nicht mehr los
Der Himmel heult
die See geht hoch
Wellen wehren Dich
stürzen mich von Tal zu Tal
die Gewalten gegen mich
bist so ozeanweit entfernt
Regen peitscht von vorn
und ist's auch sinnlos
soll's nicht sein
Ich geb Dich nie verlor'n
